Environmental Effect Evaluation of Family Farm Efficiency Improvement in Northeast China

  •   Objective  The vigorous development of family farms has become a key focus of the national policy push. An empirical study on the efficiency and environmental impact of family farms in Northeast China can provide a basis for optimizing resource allocation and reducing environmental impact of family farms in other areas.
Method  Based on the questionnaire data of 289 family farms in Northeast China in 2019, the data envelopment model is used to measure the efficiency of family farms, the life cycle assessment method is used to further explore the environmental impact changes before and after the optimization of family farm system resources.
Result  The technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency of the family farm are all less than 1, indicating the possibility of optimizing resource input. After optimization, the consumption of land, labor, and fertilizer resources in family farms will be reduced. The environmental impact potential of global warming, environmental acidification and eutrophication is reduced.
Conclusion  Improving the efficiency of resource input of family farms and reducing the green-house gases emission correspond to SDG 12 (responsible consumption production) and SDG 13 (climate action).
